A Philosophical Dilemma

If  the cure for cancer meant building a huge research station in Antarctica, should we do it anyway?

Prepare your answer by thinking about what the advantages of this could be, what the disadvantages could be and what questions you might need to ask in order to make your decision.

  1. The answer to this question is not straight forward. To help us think about this question we will list the advantages and disadvantages .

    Advantages:
-It can help people with cancer have a better life.
-People can do what they have always wanted to do in life.
-They can bring families happiness back together.

    Disadvantages:
-People would have to travel miles for the new cure.
-It will cost billions of pounds to build; it would help if every country contributed money towards it.
-Because of pollution and global warming, building it will be hard;it will also endanger the animals further.

    Our questions:
Which nation would we have to talk to about having this research station?
Why does it have to be made or built in the most endangered home to animals in the world?
Is this a cure for one, two, three or more cancer groups?

    1. I think we did really well Nicole. We listed all the notes we came up with for, against and questions. We work well together.

  2. We believe, maybe…

Here are some of the good things: saving people’s lives, bringing joy to their family’s lives, making people healthier.

However, here are some of the bad things about the idea: it could cost us a ‘bomb’, the world may become a war-zone by people disagreeing or agreeing with each other (we really don’t want that to happen).

Overall, our thoughts would be that whatever they choose, we all stay together.

  3. There are many reasons for agreeing or disagreeing but there is no simple answer.
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
    Advantages:
    1) It could save people’s lifes to raise the population of the world.
2)Hospitals could get together and help cure cancer.
3)They could get cancer charities to help.

    Disadvantages:
    1) Where are they going to build it? Most of Antarctica is mountain and so would be very difficult to build on.
2)It’s a habitat for endangered animals.
    3)People are going to disagree.
4)Global warming – it could melt the ice in Antarctica.

    Interesting questions:
    1)Who owns Antarctica?
2)How can they cure all of the cancers in the world?

  4. Thinking of this question, I thought of the advantages and the disadvantages. Here are some of the advantages:

    * It is a way of helping to cure their illness, cancer, so people can achieve their dreams and goals.

*Their life can be appreciated and cared about by people or friends.

*They can have a healthy life.

Here are some of the disadvantages:

    * You need to travel so many miles to get the cure for cancer.

    * Because it is shared, people will disagree and probably destroy the building.

Here are some of the interesting questions:

    * Who shares it and how many countries?

Overall, I would build the building to help people survive cancer.

  5. What would be the advantages?

1.It could damage the animals’ environment at Antarctic.
2.You could make families happier with the person who had cancer.
    3.It could change lives.
    4.No one can suffer cancer.

    What could be the disadvantages?
    1.The other countries might disagree.
    2.It could damage the environment.
3.You could hurt or kill the species.
4.It would cost a lot of money.

What issues might we need to think about before making a final decision?
1.Its the only land being shared between every nation.
2.They could say no to England if we debate it’s ours.

  6. Plus:
Here are some of the advantages of curing cancer:
-That we could find a way to stop fewer people from getting affected by cancer.
-The cancer charities can donate to help the research team get to their destination
-Hospitals should work together to raise the money.
    Minus:
Here are some disadvantages about curing cancer in Antarctica:
-Some nations won’t agree on going because it is a shared environment.
-You could die because of the cold temperatures.
    Interesting:
-Which part of Antarctica is it in?
    -Who owns it?
    -Which nation would you ask?

  7. Plus
Cancer is a horrible disease that would make the world happier if cured. Rich countries have enough money to pay for the huge research station and all of the countries would benefit from it. People could survive much longer thanks to a cure to this life-changing disease.

    Interesting
People like to think that cancer is un-curable but is that really the answer? Would you cure cancer if there had to be a huge station built in the Antarctica? If so think of the minuses – what if the nation might disagree with our ideas? Is this talking about one cancer disease or all cancer diseases? What nation would we have to talk to since Antarctica is shared by many continents?

    Minus
The biggest problem with this idea is that this project would cost at least £6,000,000 to carry out.Choosing Antarctica as the place to build the research station, will mean endangered animals in this habitat will be affected. Finally, the nation might disagree with the idea.

  8. There are many reasons for and against this question.

Cancer is a terrible disease that often affects most of our families and can make some unfortunate people’s life a lot shorter than it deserves to be. My reasons for building a lab in Antarctica is that fewer people in our world would die of cancer; we would have a start at curing it and our world would be cancer free.

This is the reasons against building a research lab on the continent shared by most independent nations – Antarctica. The reasons why I think we should not is we would destroy most endangered animals’ habitats that live there and also animals deserve to live as well as we do. Also we would damage the environment and we would pollute the air and make the ice melt faster.

I do not think we should build on the environment.

  9. If there was a cancer research lab built in Antarctica (a continent shared by most independent or even nations under another nation’s rule) would you be willing to help? As anybody in the UK that pay taxes, for a fact, would have to pay more into the government so our nation would not lose too much money.

And then some nations that share Antarctica may not be willing to help and as pretty much all those nations are part of the UN it may go down to a democratic vote in the UN’s main embassy in New York.

And away from those dilemmas it would be a good thing if executed correctly as if it was a cure for most cancers it would be great. If not, there is still that question – is it worth it? But even if it doesn’t cure all cancer but only halve it, it would raise the statistics of 1 in two with cancer to about 1 in 4. But there is another place to build it like the Nevada desert that is mostly uninhabited and this would lower the cost as the USA would pay to get stuff there then other nations would build it with the USA. Also every part of Antarctica is another nation’s territory. That’s the reason the research stations already there are so spread apart so one nation would have to sacrifice the land.

This is why I feel it should be built on a nation’s own country so then there is no dispute as the reason why we first built in Antarctica was for science not for cancer research.

  10. What are the advantages?
Here are a few of the advantages of curing cancer:
    – You would be able to save many people’s lives.
    – The expensive costs would be shared across the countries that agree to this idea.
    – We could help cure cancer as soon as there is just a little sign of it starting to grow.
    What are the disadvantages?
    – It may start a war ; who will rule that continent?
    – It may make the animals that live there extremely endangered.
    – It probably will cause pollution in Antarctica.
    What questions do we have?
    – What nations will we be talking to about who owns Antarctica?
    – Will the medicine cure every type of cancer?
    – Will we be able to make enough for everybody who is affected?
Of course I am not against the idea of cancer being cured but there are questions and dilemmas that need to be answered.

  11. Plus
Here are some of the advantages of finding a cure for cancer:
First of all, if there were a cure for cancer then people would be able to do the things they had always dreamed of doing ;people wouldn’t be affected by this life-changing disease. Finally, just think of the people’s lives you’re saving from this life changing disease.

  12. To help us think about this question, we thought about all the advantages and the disadvantages.

Here are some of the advantages: this will make them have a much better life,it will also bring back all the joy that they would have had if they were fit and well.

Here are some of the disadvantages: it may damage the animals’ homes and the animals, what about the money, you will need a lot of money to travel there and you will need a lot of money to get a big helicopter as you will need to bring a lot of food and a lot of resources, last but not least the global warming.

A question that needs to be asked is will the cure be for all of the cancers?

You can now notice that there a lot more disadvantages then advantages but we should do it anyway for the poor people’s lives that are being put in danger, but we can only do it with your help.

Another question that has to been asked is that why does it have to be on ice and in a cold environment?
What nations would we be sharing it with as Antarctica is a shared area?

  13. The answer to this question is hard to decide because there are different advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages are that if we find a cure for cancer, people would be healthier and families would be more like other families who are able to spend time with each other because they have not got cancer.

The disadvantages of this is that one it would be billions of pounds to build ; it would help if cancer charities contributed . Another reason is that it may cause a lot of disagreements amongst the countries.

Our questions are, which nations would we be talking to? Who would contribute towards paying ? And is it a cure for all cancers ?

  14. What are the advantages?
    Pluses to cure cancer:
-We could decrease the amount of people getting affected by it.
-The cost will be shared by all countries which agree to the idea; the results then will be shared between the countries and to their hospitals which will help its citizens.
-No room will be taken off any countries since it will be in Antarctica.

    What are the disadvantages?
-some Nations won’t agree with the idea.
-Because of pollution, the habitat will be damaged and so will the animals.
-Some of the countries will demand to be given the cure first which will start a big argument.
What are the questions we have?
-Would it cure every type of cancer?
    – How much money would it need?

  15. advantages
    1.help people stay alive
    2.no suffering from cancer.
    3.hospitals wouldn’t be full.

    disadvantages
1.people would travel miles to get the cure

    questions
Which part of antartica would it be and who would pay?

  16. Here are some of the advantages:

*Firstly we would have a cure but it would cost us a lot of money.

*It means children and adults can achieve their goals and dreams.

*Families can reunite and get together again and enjoy time with their siblings and parents.

*Cancer does feed on acid and hates alkaline which keeps your body healthy and acid does the opposite and makes your body vulnerable to Cancer.
